We all know we should drink plenty of water! Of course, that doesn’t mean we all do. And there is a lot of misinformation floating around about WHAT water you should drink: bottled, tap, still, sparkling, filtered, reverse osmosis, alkaline, distilled… The choices seem endless!
Sometimes we think the very purest is the best. But that’s not true when it comes to water! Distilled water is the purest water you can find, and that’s why it’s used in lab experiments. But while distillation does an excellent job of removing contaminants, it also removes vital electrolytes and minerals.
Why is this a problem? Your body has to donate your stored electrolytes in order to use the nutrient-free distilled water. So you actually lose nutrients, and that is a big problem for your health.
If you have a clean, reliable source of spring water, fantastic. Otherwise, my personal recommendation is to either filter your tap water (an under-sink cartridge system is inexpensive and very effective) or to buy reverse osmosis filtered water. I am not a fan of alkaline water, for the same reasons I don’t recommend drinking distilled water: it costs your body too much to use it.
And by the way… the best advice I can give you on increasing your water intake? Super simple: set an alarm for the top of the hour between 8 am and 6 pm. Drink a 6 – 8 oz. glass of water when the alarm goes off.
